Noble’s Pond Quilters Craft and Present “Quilts of Valor” to Military Veterans on Veterans Day

Noble’s Pond residents recently hosted a “Quilts of Valor” presentation to 15 military veterans who live at Noble’s Pond. The ceremony took place in the clubhouse on Veteran’s Day, with over 200 people in attendance. Each quilt was handmade by a member of the Noble’s Pond Quilters, and presented as part of the national Quilts of Valor national organization. www.noblespondhomes.com

Quilts of Valor was founded in Seaford, Delaware in 2003 by Catherine Roberts, whose son was deployed in Iraq. The organization, which grew into a national nonprofit, awards quilts to active service members and veterans to thank them for their service, sacrifice and valor in serving our nation in combat. The organization’s mission is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. Each quilt is handcrafted of the highest quality by talented volunteers.

The Quilts of Valor ceremony was organized by Noble’s Pond resident Barbara Sansone, who is a Quilts of Valor volunteer quilter and the Noble’s Pond Veterans Association. She, and fellow Noble’s Pond quilters Nancy Helmer, Mary Johnson, Alice Riley, Mary Toole and Carol Vieira, hand-crafted all of the quilts for the ceremony. They were awarded to the following veterans:

“I can’t think of a more meaningful way to celebrate Veteran’s Day than by honoring our own resident veterans,” said Colleen Ostafy, Noble’s Pond lifestyle director. “Barbara Sansone, who is a member of Quilts of Valor, brought the idea to the Noble’s Pond Veterans’ Association, who thought it was a terrific way to honor our veterans. She and her group of resident quilters spent countless hours creating beautiful quilts to award to deserving residents. The ceremony is even more meaningful since Quilts of Valor was founded right here in Delaware, and the organization does a lot of work with our neighbor, Dover Air Force Base. This is the first year we’ve awarded the quilts, but we honor our veterans throughout the year in numerous ways. In June, we partnered with Rolling Thunder to install a permanent POW-MIA Chair of Honor at Noble’s Pond, and we are currently preparing over 3,000 holiday cards to send to military hospitals and to active service people overseas.”

In addition to honoring service men and women, Noble’s Pond homeowners reach out to the larger community in a variety of ways. At Christmastime, they hold an annual Toys for Tots drive and visit residents of a Dover nursing home, bearing gifts and singing carols. The annual Girls’ Night Out raises money to fight multiple sclerosis. Residents collect and donate Legos for “Joey’s Tree”, named for the late grandson of Noble’s Pond residents who lost his life to cancer. They also cook for residents of a local shelter and participate in an annual MS walk.
