Resolutions for Active Seniors

New year, new goals! January is the time of year people think about resolutions to get back on the right track and shed those unhealthy habits. New Year’s resolutions can be one way to help guide a healthy, active lifestyle. To assist seniors with some resolution goal-setting ideas, here are three to consider for an overall healthier active lifestyle.

1. Intentional daily exercise

It is easier than you think to incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Raising your heart rate for at least 10 minutes at a time can help you to start getting on the right track to stay fit and reduce your health risks. This movement doesn’t need to be strenuous either. Benefits are gained by going on a walk or cycling. Intentionally plan for this during your daily routine. Start with a simple and short dedicated daily walk, and as time progresses, build up to walking or exercising for 30 minutes five days a week.

Regular exercise like this builds muscle strength and improves balance, it gives you more energy and can also improve your overall mood. Who doesn’t need a bit more energy in their day? The healthier you are, the more you can continue to live independently in your home.

At Noble’s Pond, active homeowners enjoy the access to the many trails around the community, and several engage in groups like the community’s Hiking Club. There are also plenty of other groups or clubhouse activities that can help you meet your exercise goals. The activities calendar is full of opportunities waiting for you!

2. More Fruits and Veggies

Focusing more on your food intake this year is a common resolution – usually in the form of diets. However, simply incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your regular diet can naturally help to maintain a healthy weight – and even lower your cholesterol and blood pressure – as well as reduce the risk of other health issues. It’s a no-brainer! Add an apple into your lunch routine or incorporate side salads with every dinner to get more leafy greens into your diet.

There are many resources available if you aren’t quite sure how else to incorporate these into your meals. Sign up for a healthy cooking class in your area, or even virtually. Browse websites for new healthy recipes you could prepare at home or with friends at a dinner party. Start a healthy recipe exchange with friends and family to build up your recipe library with more healthy options.

3. Learn a New Hobby

It’s never too late to pick up a new hobby. Think about something you’ve always wanted to try, but never seemed to have the time. Hobbies help to stimulate your brain, keep you active, and build friendships with neighbors in your community.

Finding the right hobby for you can be as simple as brainstorming about what you are interested in. Do you like to write? Writing is one of the best indoor hobbies that is perfect during the cold winter months. Do you like to read? Find a book club to discover new books and people to learn their perspectives of the book, and get recommendations for more books to read. Jigsaw puzzles are terrific for brain stimulation and mental exercise as well! Knitting, quilting, woodworking, train collecting…the options are almost limitless. Maybe your interests include philanthropy and giving back to the community but you hadn’t had time or the opportunity to be involved before. Several groups at Noble’s Pond are always planning their next philanthropic endeavor and it’s so easy to get involved!

With the plethora of clubs, groups and activities available to homeowners at Noble’s Pond, you’re sure to find a new hobby to enjoy. Sharing a hobby with others helps you meet neighbors you might not have met before and gain tips and tricks, along with laughs and new friendships.
